Phonation in commercial German

20–

Introduction

Voice artists in German commercials sometimes use things which phonetically are probably phonation. I never hear this in normal German – and I'm glad about that, because I’m not really fond of the sound of it. I find it exaggerated and high-falutin.

But interesting, from an articulatory and sociolinguistic point of view it certainly is. Last Friday I posted a question about it in Usenet discussion group sci.lang. Nathan Sanders, who is quite knowledgeable about articulatory phonetics, said it was the phonation type ‘breathy voice’, colloquially also known as ‘murmur’.

There was also some discussion about creaky voice, which I think this German phenomenon is not. After listening again yesterday (20 June), now more attentively, I think different degrees of breathiness are involved, and also a phonation type that may technically be ‘pressed voice’. Or is it stiff versus slack voice? Cf. Javanese and Bruu.

Three people, one (or two?) of which a native speaker of German, reported they had difficulty hearing what exactly I was referring to: Oliver Cromm on 19 June at 19:53:23 UTC+2, Helmut Richter on 20 June at 13:25:46 UTC+2 and Peter T. Daniels on 20 June at 18:11:42 UTC+2.

That’s why I decided to write out the entire German text and mark the syllables where I think there is something special going on with the woman’s voice.

The text is from the video at the bottom of the website of the German real-estate agent Vieten Immobilien oHG. It is about the cooperating group of real-estate agents in which this one takes part, and which is called WIB24 or Westddeutsche Immobilienbörse.

In the written-out German text, I marked the phonations I think I hear as follows:

Perhaps this might help those who couldn’t hear it, to hear it now.
